When we think of Nature, we think of forests, farms, rivers, mountains and animals. We don’t think of humans as an integral part of Nature, but this division between humans and Nature is a fundamental misunderstanding and the ultimate cause of the ecological crisis.

What is Nature? Words such as ‘natal’, ‘native’, ‘nativity’ and ‘Nature’ all come from the same root, and they are all related to birth. Europeans landed in what is now South Africa shortly before Christmas, celebrated in the Christian faith as the birthday of Jesus Christ, so they called that part of the coast Natal!
