A time of crisis is a time of opportunity. In the context of Brexit in the UK and of the Trump presidency in the United States, there is an opportunity to think afresh about the meaning of nationalism.

Brexiters want to bring power back to Britain and “take back control”. Similarly, President Trump wants to put “America first” and “Make America great again”. These are slogans. Life is more than slogans.

On the one hand Brexiters want to move away from the European Union, but on the other hand they want even more globalisation. They want to trade with the world, with New Zealand and Australia, ...
