Herefordshire. We have temporarily abandoned Brent, where an exploded bathroom pipe has proved there really is a crack in everything, even if recently installed, and we are camping in a family yurt at Hay-on-Wye. We’re there for HowTheLightGetsIn, the festival that takes its name from Leonard Cohen’s song Anthem, and it’s idyllic.

We swim in the chilly, mud-brown Wye, lie out in the sun, and, as the light fades, head to the open fire and bribe a band with a stream of toasted marshmallows to belt ...
