THE RSPB IS WRONG ON SHOOTING

Well, Russell Warfield’s interview with the CEO of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) in Issue 291 has destroyed any support I had for that organisation, because of its support for pheasant farming. This is not a simple and fluffy issue as opposed to its “nuanced approach to protecting Nature as a whole”.

The welfare implications are bad enough, and are clear for anyone who looks. They concern both the rearing, in factory farm confinement, with debeaking and high death rates because of the crowding (one local rearer told me, rather resentfully, ...
