BOLIVIA GETS PRECIOUS little coverage in the international press. Normally the election of a new president will barely merit a mention – this is after all a country that has had some 92 presidents in its 182 years of existence. But for once, in December 2005, there was world coverage when, in an eight-party election, the Movement Towards Socialism party won an unprecedented 54% of the vote. The reports concentrated on three aspects of the new President, Evo Morales: his sweater, his indigenous origins, and the fact that he is a cocalero, a grower of coca.
